The Basketball Academy at Westview Secondary offers a high performance basketball academy for students featuring elite level sport-specific basketball instruction for students in grades 8-10. Basketball Academy students receive instruction in coaching, officiating, first aid, and sports training including certification through the National Coaching Certification Program. On court sessions focus on physical literacy and fundamental movement skills, athletic skills guided by Canada Basketball’s Long-Term Athlete Development model, and basketball specific skills.
Basketball instruction is augmented with classroom theory sessions, strength and conditioning classes, and guest speakers. Students also have the opportunity to pinpoint a specific area for their own personal growth and, in collaboration with the teacher, design and implement a plan for improvement
The academy is open to boys and girls in grades 8-10. To make the program available to all students, sessions are scheduled outside of the regular school timetable, including mornings and weekends outside of the official BC high school basketball season. The coach of the basketball academy is certified by the Coaching Association of Canada.
Basketball Academy students earn credits towards graduation. For more information regarding the Basketball Academy please contact the International Program office.
